The Laramie package makes extensive use of woodgrain trim inside, with less plastic, for a more distinctive appearance. With the standard front bench seat, a very wide center console flips up to allow makeshift center seating. More factory wheel options and air dam pkgs would be nice. One exception to the Ram's flexibility is the absence of a long bed 8 feet option with the Mega Cab. The paper Infinity speakers in the front doors are garbage and were replaced twice on warranty and I put in aftermarket Infinity speakers for a great improvement in sound and reliability. It's primary purpose was to haul our 5000 slide in camper. Has been in the dealership since 9-29-10. Went to put it in reverse and it wouldn't move.
Like the 2500, the Ram 3500 is available with two powerplant options. The Mega Cab has a nice ride for a 1-ton truck. Tried to start after fueling, big noise and that was it. Rebuilt drive shafts, replaced fuel lines, new switch motor, and new transfer case. The interior is remarkably quiet, even as we ran the air conditioning, which offers minimal fan noise on the lower settings.
The instruments are legible and most switches and controls well positioned — although the audio system selector buttons and the undersized display for the optional navigation system could use a rethink. Six speed automatic is horrible. I was passing cars loaded at 85 mph! Torque with the standard manual gearbox is 610 lb-ft at just 1400 rpm; with the automatic it rises to 650 lb-ft at 1500 rpm. Folding down the back seats reveals a huge cargo area more than 70 cubic feet with a flat load floor. On or about February 27, 2014, Chrysler ceased its recall remedy program due to parts quality concerns, and then re-initiated it on or about April 14, 2014. I see a recall note below on the internet, but they should be standing behind their product either way.
Found a rear axle seal leak, not covered under warranty. The interior should be black. Transmission is very weak, lots of pulling power but transmission can't handle it. About 30 days later went to accelerate to pull out from a stop sign and it was as if I blew a spark plug off. The extra-large Mega cab was created by re-proportioning the relationship between cab and bed on a long wheelbase truck, adding 20 inches to the cab and shortening the bed to 6 feet, three inches.
I have been hoping that each repair is the last, however stuff just keeps breaking. With the latest injection system, it is very clean the tailpipe won't even go dark , much quieter you won't hear it with the stereo on , more responsive, and more powerful. The tie rod ends, front axle, everything. The cabin is loaded with nicely sized trays, slots and pockets. Whale contributed to this report.
